How to View and Send the Full E-mail Headers

 

The header in an E-mail provides vital information about who sent a particular message, and is very difficult to forge. This is essential for us to do a full investigation into reports of abuse. How you view a full header depends on the E-mail program that you use:

 


 


 

Windows:

 


 
  1. Outlook Express
    1. Double click to open the message.
    2. Under the File menu, select Properties.
    3. Click on the Details tab.
    4. The Internet headers will appear; copy and paste into the original E-mail.
  2. Outlook 98, 2000, 2002 (XP) and 2003
    1. Double click to open the message.
    2. Under the View menu, select Options.
    3. Copy and paste the text in the Internet Headers box into the original E-mail.
  3. Outlook 2007
    1. Double click to open the message.
    2. Click the small icon (when you mouseover it, it reads Message Options) in the bottom right corner of the Options toolbox.
    3. Copy and paste the text in the Internet Headers box into the original E-mail.
  4. Netscape 6
    1. Select the Inbox
    2. Under the View menu, select Headers, and choose All.
 


 

Mac OS X:

 


 
  1. Entourage and Outlook Express
    1. Double click to open the message.
    2. Under the View menu, select Internet Headers.
  2. Netscape Communicator
    1. Under the Communicator menu, select Messenger.
    2. Double click to open the message.
    3. Under the View menu, select Headers, and choose All.
  3. Mail
    1. Under the Mail menu, select Preferences.
    2. Click the Viewing icon.
    3. Click the arrow box on the Show Header Detail pop-up list, and choose All.
    4. Close the Viewing window.
 


 

WebMail Systems:

 


 
  1. AtlantisNet WebMail (SmarterMail)
    1. Open the message
    2. Directly above the body of the message and below the Subject line is a line named View.  Click the link titled Header.
    3. The full headers will now be shown.
  2. Google Gmail
    1. Open the message.
    2. Directly to the right of the Reply link is a arrow pointing down. Click this arrow and select Show original.
    3. A new browser window will open displaying the complete E-mail source along with the full headers at the top.
  3. Yahoo! Mail
    1. Select the message.
    2. Right click on the desired message using the right mouse button.
    3. Select View Full Headers.
    4. A new browser popup window will open displaying the full headers.
  4. Windows Live Hotmail or MSN Hotmail
    1. Select the message.
    2. Right click on the desired message using the right mouse button.
    3. Select View message source.
    4. A new browser window will open displaying the complete E-mail source along with the full headers at the top.
  5. AOL mail or AIM mail
    1. Select the message.
    2. Right click on the desired message using the right mouse button.
    3. Select View Message Source.
    4. A new browser window will open displaying the complete E-mail source along with the full headers at the top.
